Our Students - Room 3 - Mr Willett

Welcome to Room 3

Welcome to the 2024 school year! My Name is Jason Willett, and I will be the classroom teacher for years 5/6. In Room 3, I aim to provide a positive and friendly learning environment where students feel safe and supported. Students will be able to take risks with their learning and are encouraged to set and work towards their personal goals. High expectations, discipline and self-motivation are the key personal focuses in room 3. I focus solely on evidence-based practices and believe through well-structured and explicit learning experiences students can reach their full potential while developing a strong growth mindset.

Literacy

During our literacy blocks some of the programs that will be used in our classrooms are Talk 4 Writing, CARS and STARS, Spelling Mastery, Core5 Reading fluency and Reading Eggs/Eggspress. Literacy blocks run daily and students have multiple opportunities to master and develop new learning.

I have a strong focus on reading fluency and will be introducing dedicated time during the Literacy blocks toward high impact and effective reading fluency instruction and practice, this will also form a core part of homework. Etymology and vocabulary instruction will additionally be of particular focus. The CARS and STARS reading comprehension program will be utilized to teach specific reading strategies, alongside opportunities for practice with diverse texts. A Literacy based unit of work on a novel from the Australian reading spine each term will support the application of the learning, term one’s novel will be ‘Matilda’ by Roald Dahl.

Numeracy

During our numeracy blocks some of the programs that will be used in our classrooms are Stepping Stones, basic math facts, times tables and Mathletics. Students will be working through explicitly taught sequences of learning aligned with the Australian Curriculum and will have the opportunity to extend their learning through problem solving activities. Daily reviews of taught content provide important opportunities for practice and the consolidation of concept knowledge.

Homework

Homework provides your child the opportunity to revise and consolidate concepts that have been previously taught in class. The homework assigned will include levelled reading fluency passages, reading comprehension and mathematics activities that seek to consolidate content covered in our learning programs.
